Alumni Spotlight: Keith Reid-Cleveland

Meet Keith Reid Cleveland, a News Editor at the Black Youth Project.

Writing for several publications, how have you evolved as a writer? Do you have different voices or are you always 100% Keith?

Every publication that I've written for has had their own distinct personalities and audience. This results in writers, myself included, having to learn the balancing act of making sure that their voice can reach those different audiences while still being unique so that their work stands out from the rest. While it's something I'm still trying to master this is something I've gotten better at with practice.

What attracted you to the J-school and how did it help start your career?

I actually had some friends who were a little older than me that came to Mizzou to study journalism, so that's what initially piqued my interest. Then I started to do my own research and found out it's one of the best programs around with a massive alumni network and my decision was pretty much made then. Full disclosure, I initially dreamed of being another sports reporter you'd see on ESPN, but after trying a few things out I learned that my passion was in writing pretty quickly.

If you could go back in time to tell your college freshman self one piece of advice, what would it be?

I'd tell the college freshman version of myself to pace myself. 18 credits in your first semester? Including a 2000-level course? Maybe not the best idea.

What is your favorite NABJ-MU memory?

I've got plenty of great memories from my time as a member of NABJ-MU, including when I was on the executive board. But my absolute favorite NABJ-MU memory is when we did stadium clean-up during my freshman year. Sure, we had to wake up super early in the morning to clean up trash and avoid spilling any of the "mystery juice" we found. But that's also when I met and bonded with some of my closest friends in college.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years I see myself continuing to add a voice to the discussion race, politics and pop culture working on the book that I promised someone I'd dedicate to them before I turned 30.
